Renovation of Chengxingli Neighborhood on Beijing West Road
Renovation of Chengxingli Neighborhood on Beijing West Road
Project Address: Huangpu District, Shanghai City
Developer:Huangpu Land
Building Area: 53,615 square meters
The project is located in the No. 8 neighborhood on Beijing West Road. Chengxingli is one of the most well-preserved Shikumen architectural clusters in Shanghai, with an intact neighborhood layout. The northern part, in particular, forms a unique enclosed space. Most of the buildings date from 1911 to 1934, showcasing nine distinct architectural styles ranging from communal housing to independent residences, contributing to the historical character of Shanghai's alleyways. The neighborhood’s new and old lane houses are largely public rental housing, with widespread issues of makeshift structures. These structures are built from diverse materials and in varied forms, creating significant safety and fire hazards.
The design adheres to the principles of "retain, renovate, and rebuild," with a primary focus on preservation and protection to promote urban organic renewal and to honor the city’s historical, cultural, and intrinsic values. The aim is to improve living conditions through multiple channels and approaches. Based on the stylistic assessment of the No. 8 neighborhood and the current use of lane houses, the neighborhood has been divided into southern, central, and northern areas, each following different models of renovation and repair. The approach retains heritage buildings, preserves most residential functions, and appropriately adjusts and improves public spaces and community amenities.
