Urban Renewal Design
Respecting history is one of the major manifestations of the modern rational creative concept. In the process of large-scale demolition and construction in urbanization, Zhongfang Architecture earnestly hopes to make efforts in the protection of historical buildings and the continuation of the urban context. We advocate and practice the preservation, renovation and endowment of new functions to the original valuable buildings. Compared with demolition and reconstruction, this is not only conducive to energy conservation and environmental protection, embodying the concept of sustainable development, but also capable of generating the humanistic needs of people's nostalgia and cultural identity, enabling the inheritance of the urban context and culture.
We rented a dilapidated old house in the Pingjiang Road Historical Conservation Block in Suzhou to conduct a detailed authenticity investigation and survey, restoring its historical evolution process and cultural deposits. With protection as the main principle, it was renovated into the "Zhuyuan Guild Hall", becoming a gathering place for aspiring architects and a window to promote architectural history.
We preserved and renovated the well-known "Garden Factory" in Jing'an District, Shanghai, the former factory building of Shanghai Paper Machinery Factory, turning it into a contemporary art museum in the new Jing'an Center. We also carried out protective renovations on the historical protected buildings on Huashan Road in accordance with the principle of "restoring the old as it was". For the old residential buildings in the urban renewal of Huangpu District, Shanghai, we adopted the approach of "preserving, renovating and demolishing" simultaneously, with preservation and protection as the main focus, to deepen the organic renewal of the city, inherit the history, culture and connotations of the city, and improve the living conditions of citizens through multiple channels and means.
