MAC Museum of Contemporary Art
MAC Museum of Contemporary Art: Urban Core Renewal and Cultural Regeneration
Project Location: Jing'an District, Shanghai
Developer: Northeast Mingyuan Industrial Development Co., Ltd.
Building Area: 13,400 square meters
Renovation Principles: Restore the old as it was, juxtapose the old with the new, and ensure cohesion in new construction.
The site is located at the former Shanghai Electric Group Paper Machinery Company factory grounds, originally comprising three to four large-scale factory buildings, along with supporting office warehouses, auxiliary workshops, and more. The project includes high-rise and low-rise buildings, a clubhouse adapted from an old factory building, and a high-rise office tower. The design transforms the retained large-span factory structure into an art center, utilizing the original factory framework to shape the building facade. It employs a combination of glass and fair-faced red brick, connecting the art center with the office building through a central glass courtyard garden. The red brick joints evoke the architectural language of the original site. The vertically soaring office tower contrasts with the horizontally extended art center, creating a striking visual impact while preserving the urban heritage of the location. Disused elements from the original factory, such as steel plates, gantry cranes, production machinery, hoppers, and transportation tracks, are incorporated into the landscape as installations, capturing the history of urban development.
