Fushu Yinghua– A Landmark of Yuyuan Street’s
Project Location: Huangpu District, Shanghai
Developer: Yu Garden Sub district Office of Huangpu District People's Government of Shanghai Municipality
Located at the intersection of Fuyou Road and Lishui Road, "Fushu Yinghua" serves as a key landscape node in the "One Street, One Road" urban renewal project of Yuyuan Street. The installation consists of two main elements: a 10.88-meter-tall golden "Tree of Fortune" and a 19.88-meter-diameter circular corridor surrounding it. Inspired by the traditional Chinese concept of "outer roundness and inner squareness" (wai yuan nei fang), the golden-toned design harmonizes with the opulent aesthetic of Yuyuan’s historic architecture, shimmering brilliantly under sunlight.
Innovative Smart Construction
From design to execution, "Fushu Yinghua" utilized cutting-edge smart construction technologies to achieve its lightweight yet robust structure. Unlike conventional large-scale installations requiring thick support columns, this design ingeniously employs the outer circular corridor as a rigid support system. Horizontal tie rods transfer lateral forces from the tree to the corridor, leveraging its lateral stiffness to neutralize most stresses on the ring beams. This innovation allowed for significantly slimmer support columns. Additionally, cubic elements within the tree’s design incorporate horizontal connectors between slender steel columns, elegantly resolving structural stability challenges.
