Suzhou Zhuyuan Clubhouse
Suzhou Zhuyuan Clubhouse
Project Location: Suzhou, Jiangsu Province
Developer: Shanghai Zhongfang Architectural Design Co., Ltd.
Building Area: 420 square meters
The project is located within the historical preservation area of Pingjiang Road in Suzhou and involves the conservation and adaptive reuse of a historic riverside residential building. Through meticulous surveying and exploration, the design approach was established to incorporate three preservation methods: “original form protection,” “overall preservation with partial updates,” and “renewal and renovation.”
1. Preservation: Fully protect the main architectural features of the original building, both inside and out. Through thoughtful planning, ensure that traditional architecture can support modern functional needs by reinterpreting traditional spaces in a contemporary way, thereby maximizing the preservation of the original structure.
2. Reuse: Follow the principle of “renewal in harmony, but with distinction,” carefully updating internal spaces and structural materials. Fully utilize the smaller courtyards and patios for lighting, ventilation, and landscaping to optimize interior spaces and highlight the spatial design characteristics unique to Suzhou architecture.
3. Functional Update: For parts of the building that need renovation, including specific details and interior decoration, use modern techniques to embody the design concept of “distinguishing old from new,” creating a sense of modern living within a traditional architectural ambiance.
Based on these considerations, we established the fundamental principle of "preservation and reuse," applying a "preservation-first, selective update" approach. While focusing on protection and retention, we also integrate green and sustainable concepts, enabling the garden to blend into modern life.
