Anting New Town in Shanghai: One of Shanghai's "One City and Nine Towns"

Anting New Town is the residential functional area of the Shanghai International Auto City, with a total building area of approximately 1.06 million square meters. It is a masterpiece by Professor Albert Speer, a German planning master, and his colleagues. During the entire design process, personnel from more than twenty German design companies were involved, and Zhongfang Architecture completed part of the construction drawing design.

Creating a "new town with an authentic German style" is the goal and expectation pursued by the developer. Designers sought inspiration from the growing towns in medieval Europe. In the planning, an artificial river and an irregular ring-shaped road are used to form the boundary, a civic square enclosed by public buildings such as churches forms the center, the twin towers of the church form the symbol of the new town, and the winding and changeable road system, freely laid-out residential forms, continuous street interfaces, and pleasant spatial scales reproduce the image characteristics of the theocratic rule in the natural development of medieval European towns.

The design of Anting New Town embodies the planning ideas of humanism and sustainable development and the spirit of the times through the introduction of broad forest belts and the restoration of water systems to form an ecological concept, through the civic square that endows modern life with new connotations, through the enclosed blocks that separate people and vehicles to facilitate communication, through the simple and brightly colored architectural exteriors, and through the application of new technologies such as utility tunnels, centralized energy supply, energy-saving and heat preservation, and public health prevention.
