Jinjiatang Catholic Church
Jinjiatang Catholic Church
Project Address: Pudong New District, Shanghai
Building Area: 1,590 square meters
Construction Unit: Catholic Diocese of Shanghai
Jinjiatang, also known as the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, has a long history and was originally established in the 35th year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty. In 1845, a Korean monk named Kim Da-kyun came here to practice and became a priest, turning the church into a holy site for Korean Catholics, who regard Kim Da-kyun as a saint. Due to planning requirements, the church was demolished and rebuilt at the Lianyang Community Center. The new church is divided into three parts: the first part is the worship hall, which is circular with a diameter of 33 meters, used for gatherings and masses, and includes a separate memorial hall for Korean saints; the second part is the priests' residence, which includes housing, offices, a dining hall, and a multifunctional hall; the third part is the bell tower, which is independently set and triangular in shape. The overall building faces the central axis of the community center’s Thumb Plaza on the west side, while the east side features an asymmetrical layout, creating a balance between primary and secondary elements, as well as varying heights and sizes.
